This series of free midday concerts is held outdoors on 601 Lexington’s Plaza, attracting a diverse audience ranging from local office workers who bring their lunch to relax, visitors and area residents drawn to the jazz performers and performances, and passersby, who take a moment from their trip to simply to hear high-quality jazz.
Since its creation in 2004, the program has presented internationally-known jazz musicians while also providing a showcase for high school and college jazz bands to perform with a professional jazz musician fronting them.
Jazz in the Plaza is presented on Thursdays from May through July. Concerts begin at 12:30 P.M. and run for a little over an hour. Performances in May generally feature jazz groups from area colleges and performing arts high schools. From June through August, audiences enjoy a variety of well-regarded artists. Care is made to present a diversity of ensembles and styles ranging from small trios to large big bands.
While every effort is made to host Jazz in the Plaza in the outdoor plaza, in the event of inclement weather the concert may be moved indoors to the Sanctuary of Saint Peter’s Church.
